- Comfort women were women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery by the imperial Japanese Army in occupied territories during World War II. The name” comfort women” comes from Japanese, ianfu.
- According to the testimonies, young women at proper or not proper age were abducted from their homes by the Japanese military. If they did not go, their families or themselves would probably be killed brutally. Also, some victims were lured by the Japanese authorities.
- Based on the evidence, the youngest victims were 8 years old then; the oldest were among 80.
- Most of the comfort women came from China and Korea. Some came fromThailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, even Netherlands and Australia.
- The estimated total number of the comfort women was 410,000 (by Chinese and Korean historians).
- On average, 1 woman "served" more than 100 soldiers. According to Shaolan Wei's testimony, she once was raped by 137 soldiers in one day.
Situation of comfort women
- Only one quarter of comfort women would have the chance to survive. None of them could live a healthy life due to some sexual diseases.
- In the comfort station, the comfort women were never treated as human. Once they were sick and ill, they would be killed.
- Anyone refuse to comply the orders of any soldier was executed. But once they complied, they would be repeatedly rape.
- Due to some cultural factors in China and Korea, those survivors also faced continually humiliation. So they were not willing to tell their stories; by this, the period of history shaded for decades.
